Thoughts are things; you get what you think about most of the time, think about what you want. Thoughts are things; you get what you think about most of the time, think about what you want. No, it is not a typo; I have purposefully repeated that statement. That is the statement that my siblings and I would chant under the instructions of my father as he drove us to school every morning. Mind you, we lived in Embakasi and school was all the on Ngong road, so for those who are familiar with the streets of Nairobi,  you know it was a long chant. Day by day, the chant turned into a full fledged song with versus and chorus and everything. And I will not be surprised when I’m gray and old and dementia has caught up with me that those are the only words I’ll be chanting.

This is a concept drawn from ‘The Secret’ by Ronda Bryne, which was the book my dad was reading at that time. The basic concept is that your thoughts control the universe. Through this "law of attraction" you "manifest" your desires. The more positive thoughts you send to the universe, the more positive universe sends back. This is not entirely a new concept as it applies to technology GIGO (Garbage in Garbage Out) and even our bodies, whatever you put in your body; the body gives you the same measure. Now Bryne translated this concept to apply it to the subconscious mind.  For you to get what you want you have to think about it frequently and the universe will receive this "command" and give you what you want. In essence, the world is filled in abundance with anything we would ever want.  See yourself living in abundance and you will attract it.

This ideology might seem to contradict religion but I would like to believe that what ‘The Secret’ calls the ‘universe’ is simply just God. In Matthew 21:22, God says ‘And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith’, and He further goes to state in Matthew 7:7 ‘Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

This idea did not culminate in me when my dad explained it to my 12 year old self. Probably it was due to my feeble mind or because at that point when I wanted something, my parents were the one to give to me. So I was somehow lost in translation. Was my dad implying that he was the universe, or was he working for the universe? So instead of asking for a bike from him, should I will it to the universe and it would magically appear in my room? Honestly, at that point, that was what I thought the secret was and when I didn’t get my bike, I quickly forgot the idea. But as I grew up, more neurons developed, my brain advanced and more neurotransmitter connections were made that made me see what the law of attraction actually is.

I remember clearly when it first hit me. Where we lived, there were certain luxurious looking apartments that were being built and every time I would pass them, I would repeat to myself ‘I want to live there’. When the grand black gates were to open, I would imagine it was my family pulling out in our Mercedes Benz with me in the driver’s seat. And believe it or not, a few years later, we moved to those apartments and I remember looking out of the houses at that moment and thinking to myself in amazement and disbelief, ‘the law of attraction actually works!’

In my career in the film industry,  I started off as a production assistant while I was in campus.  Right before I graduated I said to myself that I would want to be an assistant director and that's what I have been for almost 3 years now. I then said I would love to be a producer, produce documentaries and commercials.  I have produced several TV commercials, and I am currently in the process of producing my first documentary.

I can go on and on about how the secret has worked in my life, what I have gotten from it all is that, for you to get what you want, you have to say what you want and believe it.  You can't want something and have doubts about it, it can't work. You also have to know what you want, ask and you will receive.  How else can you get what you want if you don't ask for it?

However, there are caveats.  It doesn't mean once you ask and put it out to the universe you sit and wait for it to happen.  You have to work towards it,  if it means researching,  talking to people who have achieved what you want, getting a vision board, constantly reminding yourself about it. What will be the difference between you and the next guy that just works their ass off is that you first willed it. Just as The Secret put it, "You are the master of the Universe. You are the heir to the kingdom. You are the perfection of Life."Believe it!
