Rolling Stones of Change

With every new innovation on the market, a different pace of change is set in motion. The rate at which the world is changing is further accelerated to the point where people must adapt to new ways of relating with other people, interacting with inventions as well as shifting the various dynamics involved with change processes.

For creatives, knowing that technology has the potential for creative destruction as interactions with devices, people and work become more automated, a different perspective to change is necessary.

The key question here is how do creatives embrace change to improve their craft. There are several ways to do that especially when one understands that ‘Change is a process and not an event.’

Action changes things. Understanding the mechanics of moving from one point to another has an effect on how we view reality and life in general. Here are five areas that I believe change is being activated.

1. Reading

Books on Technology (Photo/ BackChannel)

Reading a lot of great books, articles, journals and blogs has a way of massively changing tunnel-vision views into wide-angle perspectives. A majority of the world’s greatest leaders are avid readers. Creativity flows through unlearning and learning in new ways. Read books on creativity like Creativity Inc if you want to create, on Self Leadership if you want to lead and finish well, on all things Technology to stretch your brain, on being single and of course all and any of the African writers you can find.

2. Climate Change

Without any serious concern and action on the environment, the world will continue to get warmer. 2016 was the hottest year on record, confirmed by the scientific community, and the third time in a row the previous year was the hottest year due to mostly human activity. A significant piece to how this can be reversed is the active participation of the young generation. We need to engage toward using more responsible approaches to clean energy in order to reduce the earth’s temperatures by 2Degrees Celsius. Opting for renewable energy over combustive fuels that produce carbon emissions is one of many ways to do this.

3. Immigrants

Refugees are humans too. Having empathy for those who are suffering irrespective of their differences in race, nationality, beliefs and geographical location is the basis of our humanness. There is no proper way to explain the infliction of extreme suffering on innocents on the basis of greed, power and aggression. Think of Aleppo, South Sudan, Burundi, and now the African refugees in Europe. While movement has always been a part of human history, it has morphed into absurdity in our generation with the manhandling of refugees and insane modes of migrant movement across deadly oceans. Stocking our humanity (Ubuntu) and allowing every individual to have a legal identity is essential to positive change otherwise what makes us different from wild beasts.

4. AI and IoT

C-3PO is a droid programmed for etiquette and protocol, built by the heroic Jedi Anakin Skywalker, and a constant companion to astromech R2-D2. Over the years, he was involved in some of the galaxy’s most defining moments and thrilling battles -- and is fluent in more than seven million forms of communication. (Photo/ Star Wars)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has come to stay. As more robots and self aware software are created at levels that are making them more personal with humans, it is better to understand that no amount of technology is better than the actual human brain. The purpose of these machines is to improve the quality of life in nanotechnology, medical science, transportation, entrepreneurship and entertainment among several others. The take home point is not to get left behind. Additionally, with an endless bombardment of data into our daily lives, the Internet of Things (IoT) provides various avenues  for major improvements in process, interactivity and creativity. In a Star Wars scenario, having Ai droid friends like C-3PO should not be an abomination to the human race.

5. Stay Connected

With increasing Social Media options, more intentionality is required to stay connected with people. (Photo/ SpeakEasy)

No one else is responsible for your sanity. Every individual has a personal responsibility to chose to live healthily, mindfully and progressively. Embracing failure as a normality of life leaves room for a great learning curve that leads to success (—INSERT—your definition of success). There are no perfect situations. However, with perseverance, tenacity and open-mindedness anyone can live a life that is fulfilling, objective and effective. Only you, have the ability to change your personality according to Me, Myself and Us. Through disconnecting with negative influences in your life, people can tether their lives powerfully by connecting to people within healthy boundaries to live with purpose, joy and hope.
