Friendships

Friendships can be formed in the strangest of places.

There are the usual culprits: Primary School, Secondary School, University, Church, Work, Neighbour hood and Family Friends.

Then there are the unexpected ones: you start talking to someone at the salon and realize you have a lot in common, or you’re waiting on the queue at the passport office and you need to borrow a pen, conversation starts and it doesn’t stop until one party is summoned to the desk.

It could be on a flight, you just hit it off with the person on the opposite aisle and a couple of years down the line, you’re walking down the aisle.

It could even be at a job interview, you start chatting with the person next to you to help calm the nerves and realize he is able to provide a solution to an issue you’ve been dealing with for years.

Over the years, I have realized the importance and benefits of friendships and mutually beneficial relationships.

The Canadian Musician Drake sings ”I still ride with my day one n****s, I don't really need No new friends, no new friends, no new friends, no, no new”

I don’t think that is the right mentality to have as no man is an island. As time goes by, we evolve, our tastes and interests change, some people mature more than others so our friendship groups need to expand.

I think it is good to have a balance of New and Old friendships especially if your day 1 friends work in fields completely different from you.

As a creative entrepreneur, I have seen the benefits of having friends in the same industry as we face similar challenges so can share our experiences, struggles and how we deal with issues.

People like to do business with people they know, some areas of work complement each other. I am in no way advocating forced friendships or sucking up to people. I just think putting on a friendly face and starting up conversations with interesting looking people at events where there are people in your sector is a good thing.

There are many benefits of collaboration.

Like the African Proverb says: If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together.

Old friends remind you of the morals and values your parents imbibed in you growing up, you can reminisce on old times, have memories to recall and if you act off character they can put you in check.

However, some old friends are unable to deal with the person you’ve become, not because they don’t wish the best for you maybe because it just doesn’t add up in their head e.g. How could a weed smoking, club hopping, girl swapping alcoholic suddenly become a Pastor, it happens.

New friendships bring a different perspective, they see you as the person you have become not who you used to be.

Some of my closest creative friendships have been formed through social media as we have similar interests, similar style, similar passions, etc

My wedding is in a few weeks and through the planning process I have benefited greatly from friendships formed in different manners. It is Amazing what the right words can do on a tough day.

I hope you are more open to forming new relationships.

Friends are like flavours, they spice up your life with their different experiences, opinions and upbringing. Let your life be Flavourful!
