Today the 9th of January 2017, the Heads of states in ECOWAS are to have a mediation session in Nigeria and will be chaired by President Buhari to discuss the implications of President Jammeh's reluctance to hand over power to President-elect Adama Barrow. Jammeh has held the office of the president since his 1994 military coup, after the recent election he took everyone by surprise by conceding defeat to the winner, which is outlined in article 9 of the ECOWAS Protocol in Democracy and Good Governance. This however, is no longer the case as Jammeh changed his mind over handing of power, therefore this is a challenge of democracy and an intervention is needed. Implications of this include; divide in the country, which has already started with the army chief pledging alliance to Jammeh, which evidently can result to protests and violence just like the Côte d'Ivoire crisis of 2012. The mediation session is expected to have outcomes that will resolve this issue and prevent it from escalating to a violent one or even invite other foreign countries from intervening.
