I trust you are well. I know you will agree with me that field trips are a great way to make learning exiting, and now it’s especially great that you are considering a big field trip to Kenya.
I want to tell you about my home, Kibera. I know you must have read a lot about Kibera being one of the largest slums in Africa. Maybe you heard it was dirty and smelly but I want you to know that it is also a place of hope! The people I live with work hard and each of us have dreams. Within this slum there is an amazing organization known as Shining Hope for Communities (Shofco). I, Makena Mumbi, would swear that Shofco is my hope. It was a starting point for change in my life and community at large. I am a grade 5 student at The Kibera School for Girls’, a tuition free school run by Shofco. I like singing and dancing, and I am aspiring to become a nurse and pretty sure that with Shofco I shall achieve my dreams.
Life was stacked against me because l grew up in a family plagued by alcoholism, prostitution, starvation, humiliation and rape. I did not know what my life would be and every day I wanted to believe that one day it would be different. Luckily at the age of 6, SHOFCO rescued me. Shofco has grown and expanded over the past years and l am glad that more disadvantaged girls like me can now access free education. My community too is benefiting through provision of free medical care, free library and computer services, clean water supply, community empowerment and youth programmes. Can you believe how lucky I am and that SHOFCO does all of these things for my neighbors and friends?
My letter to you is to give you a positive insight of the life of some of the girls in the slum of Kibera lead, and the hopes we have to make our community and world better. I admire you and know that you can back such programmes that help inspire children, making them realize that they can grow up to be more than they ever dreamed. What was your dream as a child?
I hope one day you might both come visit our school. We can play on our roof playground and learn poems together and be friends.
