What goes into your mind when you see that person in your neighborhood that is living with a physical disability?Do you just look at them and wonder oh how unfortunate!!Living with a disability is not easy.Today's article will focus on the challenges that these people have to deal with day in day out.
Many are the times that we meet people in the streets who are living with a disability. The look we give them "the pity look" is in every sense annoying and make them feel worthless. Some offer money, others are even afraid of touching them. One thing we should understand is that these people are human and just because they need assistance once in a while does not mean they are vulnerable.I am also a victim of this stigma as i also have a disability.People out there treat you like you are not human. No one ever wished to be born with the disability, some are even not inborn but due to one reason or the other you find yourself being a victim. That matatu tout that feels hoisting up a wheelchair is a lot of work, that parent that hides their child because he/she has a disability, that stranger that is afraid of greeting you because your hand is deformed and thinks that by greeting you will hurt you somehow.I mean come on when will we ever wake up from this!!!It is very irritating when you are treated different as if you are not human. Some questions that are asked you even wonder how to answer them. How i wish the next time you would put yourself in that persons shoes and experience the pain that we go through. Accepting ourselves was hard enough then we get all kinds of maltreatment in return??Surely let us change our way of thinking.
We are not disabled but abled differently. The next time you see that brother, that sister, don't just pity them because actually that is the last thing that they need.Try to lend a hand if they need it and treat them as human.Lets make a difference because after all,you might need that persons help one day.
